Dawes Arboretum
located in Newark, Ohio

Dawes Arboretum is an immense collection of plants and trees with over 1500 acres, 15,000 plant specimens of 4,500 different species. The following genera that are actually comprehensive include: Conifers, Hamamelis, Ilex, Aesculus, Ginkgo, Buxus, Quercus, Viburnum, and Spiraea.

The gardens were developed by Beman and Bertie Burr Dawes who reserved the area and set up a foundation in the 20s that became the arboretum.

One of the highlights is the Japanese Garden, which features the annual explosion of cherry tree blossoms in the Spring and hosts other special events during the year like Bonsai Tree shows. There is also a beautiful Confifer Glen, an Oak Collection, Crab Apple Collection, Holly Hill, Cypress Swamp, Azalea Glen, Herbarium, Rare Tree Walk, Juniper Collection, two cemeteries, Dawes Lake, and forestry test plots. Many of the showcased plants are meant to grow in central Ohio's sometimes severe climate.

The grounds and facilities are available for garden weddings, specifically the visitor center for indoor weddings, the outdoor Main Shelter House which is surrounded by woods, and the outdoors Education Shelter House which overlooks Tripp Higgins pond. They have a preferred caterer for events on the grounds.
