Glacier Gardens Rainforest
located in Juneau,
Alaska
While the Glacier Gardens are actually a commercial attraction and nursery, it is well worth the visit because of its 50 acres of beautiful landscaped gardens, flowers and the natural rainforest area.
Located in the Mendenhall Valley east of Juneau, the gardens were started by Steve and Cindy Bowhay with the reclamation of a stream area. The two owned a nursery / landscapng business in Juneau and eventually decided to turn the area into a rainforest attraction. They built out ponds and waterfalls, and planted Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Japanese Maples, Native Devil's Club and Elderberry shrubs, among other plants.
Since first starting out with the initial 5 acres of land, they've expanded with another 45 acres that include pathways to the scenic lookout on 580 foot Thunder Mountain. One of the other interesting attractions are the trademark "upside-down" trees that originally came about as an accident in which a tree which was being moved by machine was dropped upside down and "planted" into the ground. They also have a landscaping nursery that provides plants, flowers and other related services.
Glacier Gardens is a popular place to hold weddings and other parties. The gardens (in particular the visitors center) are available for rental 7 days a week from 6pm to 8pm. There are photo ops at the Atrium and other locations. This is somewhat nice because although it is open to the public, the gardens close at 6 so you'll have much of the area to yourself.
