Alaska Botanical Gardens
located in Anchorage, Alaska

The plans for the Alaska Botanical Garden were begun in 1983 with their grand opening happening only in 1993. The gardens today comprise over 110 acres of spruce / birch woodland in Anchorage close to Far North Bicentennial Park; new plans for expansion and rennovation of the gardens are constantly in place.

The maintained gardens boast over 1,100 species of perennials and 150 native northern plant species, although the majority of the land is still not developed. Some of the current gardens include two flowering perennial gardens, a formal herb garden and alpine rock garden and a wildflower walk.

To the southwest of the herb garden is the 1.1 mile Lowenfels Family Nature Trail which traverses throughout various plant communities near the Campbell Creek and Chugach range with interpretive native flora and signs guiding the way. As this is Alaska, there are numerous chances to view native wildlife along the trail and within the gardens itself.

They also have annual Garden Fairs and Garden Art Shows in the summertime, as well as a Lighthouse Gardens Tea, Secret Garden tours and the Anchorage Garden Club Flower Show.

Parts of the grounds are available for garden weddings, but because it is a public garden the party size is limited to 150 and certain dates in the summer are off limits due to regularly scheduled events. They have at least 5 sites available for gardens including 2 perennial gardens, an herb garden w/ trellis fence, a larger clearing near the rock garden and a small rustic area next to a glacial boulder. There is an application form on site, please contact the gardens for more details.
