Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory
located in Detroit, Michigan

This is an interesting conservatory that is located on Belle Isle in Detroit. The 13 acre Anna Scripps Whitcomb conservatory was started early in 1904, though it has undergone various redesigns over the years. It's named after Anna Scripps Whitcomb whose specialty was orchids - tellingly this is the largest city owned orchid collection in the U.S.

There are 5 sections in the 1 acre conservatory centered around a large 85 foot dome with a north, south and east wing. The southern wing focuses on economically important tropical plants (think bananas and sugar cane and coffee) while the north focuses on fern, cacti and succulents. The eastern showhouse has various blooming plants throughout every season. The large dome is reservd for larger tropical plants like palms. There are also perennial gardens, flower beds, roses and ponds.

The conservatory is managed by BIBS (the Belle Isle Botanical Society).
