Barrett House
located in New Ipswich, New Hampshire

This is the New Ipswich home of Charles Barrett circa 1800 or so. It is set in a relatively rural area which features an extensive wooded area and meadows. Various period movies have been filmed using the area. The grounds include a greek revival summerhouse and in the back of the house there is a small fenced garden that was originally planted to furnish vegetables for the overseers of the property. In the 1990s, volunteer Priscilla Williams transformed it into a "grandmother's garden" that would have been popular during the colonial revival era.

Unlike typical formal gardens, these gardens feature rustic plantings with "old-fashioned" flowers. Williams has gone out of her way to use more uncommon flower varieties like blue lace, bishop's flower, hyacinth bean, Spanish Flag and Fuller's Teasel. Other plants include hollyhocks, poppies and morning glories. Much of the blooming starts in mid-July.
