Boerner Botanical Gardens
located in Hales Corners, Wisconsin

The beautiful Boerner Botanical Gardens are located within the 1000 acre Whitnall Park in Milwaukee County. Charles B. Whitnall, the former secretary of the Milwaukee County Park Commision is who the park is named after. The gardens are named after Alfred Boerner, who was the landscape architect of Milwaukee County in the 30s and designed the initial 5 formal gardens.

The five gardens are the Perennial, Annual, Rose, Peony and Rock gardens. Since they were made, additional areas include a fantastic herb garden with 300 plus herbs (Medicinal, Culinary, Native and other Specialty Herbs), a Daylily Path featuring many different flower shapes (pointed star, doubles, flat saucer, and spider), an elevated Bog walk, and a Shrub Mall reminiscient of an old English country estate garden.

Besides the more formal Rose garden, there are also Trial gardens including two All-America test and trial gardens featuring roses and other flowers. The large Arboretum encompasses parts of Whitnall park and stretches along the Root River Parkway, featuring a large assortment of trees like oak, maple, magnolia, beech, ash, conifers, crab apple, nut trees and ornamental fruit trees. You can see 250 different specimens of lilacs in the arboretum. Scupture and stone art is also sprinkled throughout the garden.

Parts of the garden are available for weddings (there are 6 different areas to choose from) and the Education and Visitor Center has rooms for rental for events (Boerner Hall, Garden Room, Multimedia Room, and 2 classrooms are available).
