Cathedral of the Pines
located in Rindge, New Hampshire

Cathedral of the Pines is a wonderful, peaceful getaway near the town of Rindge that is open to all faiths - it is known as the "cathedral without walls." It was originally dedicated as a tribute to Sandy, the son of Douglas and Sibyl Sloane who was killed in WWII. The area was originally a small farm where the Sloane's hoped to build an outdoor chapel. In 1950, the chapel was dedicated as a memorial to all Americans who have perished in wars.

The grounds span over 200 acres of pine forest and formal gardens. There are two edifices of note: the first is the Altar of the Nation which is an official national memorial for all Americans war dead - it is actually built of stones from every state and territory in the United States, along with other stones from battlefields around the world. The second is a 55 foot tall Women's Memorial Bell Tower dedicated to women who lost their lives in service to the nation.

Other area shrines that visitors may reflect upon include the Fountain and Tree of Life, Mother's Chapel, the Baptismal Font, the Lectern, the Pulpit and the Ten Commandments Monolith.

Besides the cathedral park, there are nearby area attractions to visit for picnickers and hikers, such as Annett State Park and Mt. Monadnock. The gardens and facilities are also available for either memorial services or weddings.
