Cheyenne Botanical Gardens

The Cheyenne Botanical Gardens are well respected for their commitment to green power and their dedicated staff of volunteers of all ages (over 90% of ALL work is performed by volunteers). The garden spans 8 acres and is located in Lions Park near Cheyenne. It is one of the few (if not the only) public botanical gardens in Wyoming.
While the garden itself was only begun in 1977, it is a pioneer in many aspects of responsible gardening. The original impetus for the gardens and its current nucleus is a 6,800 square foot Conservatory entirely heated by solar power and with half the electricity used coming from the sun as well. The Conservatory contains three different greenhouse sections - one featuring herb/cacti gardens, tropical plants and koi ponds, one focusing on vegetable production, and one dedicated to supplying the garden as well as the Cheyenne park system with flowers and bedding plants.
One of the most interesting parts of the garden is the High Plains Arboretum which was orginally begun as a field station in the 1930s to research suitable plants for growing in the High Plains areas of the U.S. Unfortunately, the arboretum is now closed to the public after its mission was aborted in the 70s, although you can contact the gardens to view it by special arrangement. The "Friends of the High Plains Arboretum" is a group that is currently attempting to preserve the remaining plants and trees that have survived in the Arboretum.
Other notable features in the outside grounds include cacti, rose and herb gardens, displays for annual and perennial flowers, a Sensory Garden w/ gazebo, the Women's Civic League Peace Garden, a Discovery Pond and Wetlands area, and Xeriscape planting garden.The gardens are available for weddings and other events, in particular the Peace Garden and Discovery Pond area. You have to submit a rental form and there is usually a limit on the number of participants allowed (150 to 200 people or less in most cases).
