Dyck Arboretum of the Plains
located in Hesston, Kansas

Dyck Arboretum of the Plains is owned by and located on the campus of Hesston College (north of Wichita). This is a "Prairie Garden" that focuses on the year round unique native flora of Kansas, including indigineous trees, wildflowers, grasses and shrubs in a Great Plains setting. Special attention is also paid to ecological concerns (water usage and insect control methods) on the surrounding landscape and native wildlife like birds, butterflies, and other insects.

The arboretum was started up in 1981 and is currently 13 acres large and contains over 600 varieties of native (and some non-native adaptable species of) flora. Work is currently being done on adding another 18 acres to the north of the park on the "Prairie Window Project" which will feature displays recreating various prairie habitats in Kansas.

The arboretum features wonderful wildflower displays, a buffalo grass meadow, various other tallgrass, shortgrass and mixed grass prairie plants. They hold seminars and workshops to teach people about conservation and native plantlife. To raise funds they hold the semiannual "FloraKansas: The Great Plains Plant Bazaar" which is the largest native plant sale in the state including perennials, grasses, ferns, vines, shrubs and trees.

A bird watch area, children's garden, shade garden, american heritage garden are also in the works. The arboretum is available for rental for events such as reunions, birthdays and garden weddings. The Visitor and Education Center overlooks the lake and is where most of the receptions are held. The weddings themselves can take place in several areas around the lake and also in the amphitheater or the buffalo grass meadow.
