Georgeson Botanical Gardens
located in Fairbanks, Alaska

Located on the campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Georgeson Botanical Garden is nationally recognized for its plant research and education and focuses on teaching the public about native northern flora. The gardens can trace their history back to the early 1900s when it was a horticultural demonstration garden station where cultivation experiments were performed on various vegetables, grains, grasses and other plant crops. In the 1980s it transitioned to a botanical garden to accomodate the increasing public interest in the garden.

The focus of the garden is on horticultural tests of various trees, shrubs, perennials and Alaskan native plants, as well as research trials on vegetables, fruits, herbs and other crops (most people will be familiar with Alaska's famous gigantic vegetables). However, there are also other specialty areas including the Frank Wooding Memorial Garden, a "Hardy" roses and Annuals section, the Robert Speck Memorial Garden (featuring delphiniums and sunflowers), the Dorothy Truran Memorial Herb Garden, the Ohlsen Family Garden, the Dorothy Beistline Memorial Cutting Garden, a Children's Garden (under construction), a Dye garden that features annuals and perennials that can be used as natural dyes, Grete Risse Memorial Shade Garden (featuring shade plants like begonias, fuchsias, ferns, violas, and impatiens), and pond/wetland areas.

The gardens are also only one of 5 botanical gardens to be a test garden for the IHFF (International Hardy Fern Foundation). There is also a demonstration windbreak and a forest nature trail. The gardens are available for wedding and other gatherings, although they are subject to certain conditions and limitations due to the public nature of the gardens. They will not close off any portion of the garden, though you can reserve both the particular garden area for use as well as the Rotary Pavillion for your events. Check with the garden for more information.

Crossing The Gates Of Alaska
by: Dave Metz
The snow forms the beginning of a near vertical chute that falls at least a thousand feet. My feet, shaking, manage to hug the thin edge of solid rock. I feel my heart creep to my throat and warm sweat drip down my back, defying the subzero Arctic air. Somehow I reach a plateau and think the worst is behind me. I couldn't be more wrong.

This is the story of Dave Metz's death-defying, ... [reviews]

From the moment he embarked from San Francisco in May, 1879, "off for icy Alaska," Muir sensed he was on an extraordinary adventure. Venturing on foot, by canoe and dogsled, he experienced equal excitement discovering an ... [reviews]
