Hillwood Museum and Gardens
located in Washington,
District of Columbia
Hillwood Museum and Gardens was formerly an estate known as Arbremont that overlooks Rock Creek Park. The house had been built in 1926, but was purchased and rennovated by Marjorie Merriweather Post in 1955 as an opulent residence with formal gardens. The 25 acres of the estate are comprised of 12 acres of formal gardens and grounds surrounded by 13 acres of woodland. Some of the flowers and plants featured throughout the gardens include: over 4000 azaleas, countless rhododenrdons, lilacs, viburnum, redbuds, magnolias, dogwoods, cherries, primrose, tulips, daffodils, and pansies.
The garden areas are the French Parterre (divided into quadrants with paths, a pool at center, and surrounded by walls of English Ivy), a Lunar Lawn (a cresecent shaped lawn bordered by trees and flowerbeds featuring over 7000 tulips and 3000 pansies), a Japanese influenced garden created by Shogo J. Myaida (with ponds, stuppas, lanterns, and statuary, along with trees and shrubs typically found in Japanese gardens), a circular shaped Rose Garden with wooden pergola, greenhouses and a cutting garden.
The museum now houses fabulous examples of furniture, textiles, glass, ceramics, metalwork and paintings. There is also a putting green, friendship walk and a pet cemetary.
