Kalmia Gardens
located in Hartsville, South Carolina

As part of Coker College in Hartsville, the Kalmia Gardens are named after the Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifolia) which is native to the eastern coast of the U.S. and features star shaped blooms. The 30 acres of gardens include the Thomas Hart House and are partially located alongside Black Creek. The diverse flora in the area is due to the steep 60 foot drop in elevation from the house to the creek.

Some of the plants in the garden include the kalmia (blooms appear in profusion in May), azaleas, wisteria, tea olives and camellias. Other areas include pine and oak stands and laurel thickets and the "blackwater swamp" area near the creek. The area is also very popular with birdwatchers and hosts school field trips, public programs, tours, and festivals.
