Rhododendron State Park
located in Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire

The focal point of this wondrerful state park is the largest rhododendron grove in northern New England. It has been operated as a botanical park by the New Hampshire Division of Parks since 1946. It can trace its history back to 1788 when Samuel Patch settled in the area near the rhododendron patch. Throughout its lifetime ownership has changed hands several times, and it has survived logging threats. In 1903 the land was given to the Appalachian Mountain Club by Miss Mary Lee Ware so that the rhododendron grove and pine forest might be preserved. The AMC used the house as a hostel / clubhouse until it was transferred to the State Parks Division. In 1982 the Rhododendron Maximum stand received National Natural Landmark Status.

The park itself is over 2700 acres, while the native wild Rhododendron stand is about 16 acres. There is a short 1/2 mile trail that goes around the rhododendrons and is very popular during the blooming season in July. Another wildflower trail is located in the forest next to the grove. Other plants that join in are mountain laurel, heather, mayflower, blueberries and cranberries. The historic cottage (Old Patch Place)was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the 80s.

Listed in Categories: Botanical ~ Historical ~ Wildflowers
