Sitka Pioneer Home and Gardens
located in Sitka, Alaska

The Sitka Pioneer Home started out as a Marine barracks in the 1890s, before it was turned into a home for pioneer prospectors and others who needed care in 1913 or so. It has undergone numerous rennovations and expansions over the years and today it is the 3rd largest Alaska Pioneer Home out of six and is capable of caring for 75 patients. The prospector statue in the front of the home is a popular tourist attraction, having been based on Alaskan pioneer "Skagway Bill".

The grounds are also the home of Alaska's oldest operating public garden. The garden was first planted around 1936 with Spruce, Hawthrones, Barberry and English Yew. There is a very small Japanese garden, a greenhouse, and more than 6000 annuals (two of the most common are calendula and nasturtium) are planted each season. Some of the flowers include giant rhdodendrons, azaleas, morning glories, astilbes, bellflowers and various roses (including the Sitka Rose).
