Smith's Castle
located in Wickford, Rhode Island

This wonderful historic location can be traced all the way back into the 1630s and the Smith family. In 1948, the Cocumscussoc Association purchased the property in order to preserve it. Along with the historic house, the grounds are planted with wonderful garden areas including an 18th century flower and herb garden that has changed over time with nature, a traditional Dye garden (with plants like marigold, sunflower, tansy, yarrow, hibiscus, nastirium, and musk mallow), and a kitchen garden.

Along with the formal gardens, the volunteers at the castle have taken into account landscaping practices that are "healthy" and sustainable. This includes the installation of shoreline (riparian) buffers to help control storm runoff and protect water resources, crushed stone walkways as opposed to grass ones, healthy lawn care, and composting.
