Terrace Park Japanese Gardens
located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota

These japanese gardens are located within Terrace Park which is located on bluff that overlooks the Big Sioux River system. It was originally constructed in 1930 by the caretaker of the park, Mr. Joe Maddox, alongside the eastern side of Covell Lake. The gardens included numerous stones and stone ornaments, arbors and reed hanging lanterns. During the war, it was often vandalized due to "patriotic" war mob mentality - even though the name was changed to "Chinese Gardens" in order to try and protect it.

The gardens continued to deteriorate as they were overlooked until the 1980s when the non profit organization Shoto-Teien ("whispering pines") undertook a plan to rennovate the gardens. The japanese landscape architect Professor Koichci Kawana was hired to advise on design and funding came from the city, the Japanese government and Toshiba America. Over 200 trees and perennials were planted, additional ornamental stones were placed, and a new gazebo was constructed. Today there is a waterfall and bridge, pathways along the lake and many blooming flowers.

The park does allow wedding ceremonies and photography at the Japanese Garden and the Band Shell. The location needs to be reserved by calling them, and the closing time of 10:00 is strictly enforced.
