The Elms
located in Newport, Rhode Island

The Elms is a summer residence originally designed for the coal magnate family Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind in 1901. It is part of the Newport family of mansions as curated by the Preservation Society of Newport County, and as such you should check and see what other mansions you can visit as part of a package if you are in the area. Outside of the mansion, there are terraces with sculpture in marble and bronze, marble pavillions, a sunken garden, carriage house, a specimen tree area. The classical revivial style gardens were originally developed in 1907-1914 but have recently been rennovated. The Elms was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1996.
