The Fells Estate and Gardens
located in Newbury, New Hampshire

This historic 20th century estate and gardens is located on Lake Sunapee near the John Hay National Wildlife Refuge. The term "Fells" is not the estate owners last name, but refers to "rocky, upland pastures". The estate itself spans 164 acres and contains several colonial revival buildings and some great gardens to see.

Hiking and Nature Trails wind around the lake. One of the trails is the 1 mile long John Hay II Forest Ecology Trail which features white and yellow birch, red and white pine, beech, sugar maple, and red spruce, as well as numerous ground cover plants. There are also 2 virgin hemlock trees that date 300 to 400 years ago.

One of the most notable gardens is Clarence Hay's Rock Garden, which was reconstructed recently (and continues to undergo rennovation) and currently has 600 distinct species of alpine and rock garden friendly plants that were reintroduced into the garden. It was originally built in 1926. There is a Japanese Water Lily pool and brook in this garden.

Other areas include a 100 foot hardy perennials border, a Rose Terrace with different rose shrubs, and the Old Garden (also called the Pan Garden) that contains woodland plants, rhododendrons, azaleas and a Chinese Dogwood (although it was originally used for roses and perennials).
