University of Vermont Horticultural Research Center
located in Burlington,
Vermont
Informally called the "Hort" by many, the center features 97 acres of land that is used in conjunction with the university for research and instruction. Other gardening groups also make use of the facilities, which has been a sort of testbed for cold-weather horticulture for over 50 years.
After signing in at the Blasberg Bldg, visitors can go on a self-guided Woodland Walk. Many different types of plants are represented, with a standout selection of 700 different kinds of ornamental trees and shrubs.
Some of the highlighted sections include over 120 different types of Crabapple, an Apple Tree research area, 90 kinds of lilacs in the Lilac collection, Juniper trees (60 different kinds), Rhododenrons, Conifers and other woody plants, and a large perennial area for Vermont garden plants.
The newest area is The Cary Award Garden which features the Hort. Farm's award winning plants.
