University of Wisconsin Madison Arboretum
located in Madison, Wisconsin

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum was established in the 1930s and borders the southern part of lake Wingra and is operated by the University. The vast 1260 acre abroretum boasts a huge variety of tree species. They are actually famous for having an extensive system of restored ecosystems.

A sampling of the diverse ecological communities include Prairies and Savannas (includes the 60 acre Curtis Prairie which is the world's oldest restored prairie), Deciduous Forests (Wingra Woods has 52 acres of oak, sugar maple basswood and beech and also contains ancient Native American burial mounds), Conifer Forests (21 acre Leopold Pines has red and white pines, representative of the Wisconsin north woods) and Wetlands (Wingra Marsh hosts many native waterfowl and other creatures at Stevens and Spring Trail Ponds).

In addition to the arboretum, the nearby Longenecker Horticultural Gardens span 50 acres of more than 2000 types of plants as well as major displays of crabapples, conifers, lilacs, viburnums and other native woody plants. There is also the nearby Viburnum Garden and a 4 acre Wisconsin Native Plant Garden.
