Vermont Cold-Hardy Cactus Garden
located in Middlebury, Vermont

You'd think Vermont would be the last place to find a cactus garden. Nevertheless, a botanical cactus garden does exist in Middlebury, although it is a private residence. It is, however, open to the public by appointment (the gardens are at the residence of the Varricchiios, and you should call before visiting).

This is a small nonprofit and amateur botanical cactus garden which spans only 100 sq. feet but it does feature an interesting array of different types of succulents and cacti that will actually grow in the colder New England and Canadian areas. The gardens explore the feasability of planting desert plants in colder climes, but not content to limit the garden to just cacti, they've even begun testing to see whether Sequoia trees will grow.
